Odds and Ends

From Larry’s collection of hollyhocks, a few remaining “red” blossoms. It is the end of the growing season.

Making an Apology

How does one go about apologizing for something that has been done that can’t be undone?  How do you unhurt someone who has been hurt?  When I think over the last eighty-four years, there has been plenty of that.  Why is it that we seem to think that our families can take the brunt of this behavior easier that friends and acquaintances or work associates?

Even when we know we are wrong, are we afraid to speak honestly, and say, I’m so sorry.  What can I do to rectify this?”  Are we afraid.  Are we so ashamed of our behavior / our actions that we think there are no words to help?  It occurs to me that this part of this BLOG may be about unanswered (and, perhaps, unanswerable) questions.

There are those times when something happens that we didn’t actually do.  Something that occurs because we did not give specific directions.  Something happens because of our negligence.  But, it happens.  It wasn’t really our fault, but it was our fault that we didn’t prevent it.  How do we apologize for that?

Can we send an apology out into the universe for all of those things we’ve done that have hurt others?  Some that we don’t even know?  Others that will stay with us, it seems forever; that we think about day after day?  Others that will happen in the future?

So, here I am, apologizing to all who have ever been injured … hurt in some way.  For all of those things I’ve done, whether I’ve known it or not.  I apologize.  I think that is the best I can do, at this late date.

No “last rose of summer,” this year. The Japanese beetles took care of those late bloomers. But, the white hollyhock (left from Larry’s collection) is still blooming.

And, now that autumn is here … a poem.

Anticipation

Autumn is ahead.
We look forward to what is coming,
Tinted leaves will speckle the trees
And bushes.

Nights get colder,
I hear you say, “Thank God!”
Quilts and comforters
Come out of storage.’

Flowers die.
Their stalks get cut
To the ground.
No more watering grass.

Winterize the car.
Take hoses from the faucets.
Get out the snow shovels
And the ice chopper.

When will we see
The first snow?
September, October,
November, December.

Always a question
About the first measureable
Snow fall.
Centimeters or inches?

Don’t worry
Spring will be back soon
And, then, summer.
Too soon for me.

Tiny, yellow mullein blossoms. Beloved by bees and other pollinators. Seeds loved by tiny birds. Behind, you see one of the aspens that will comprise my aspen grove. There are about six “new” saplings growing.

I’m ready for fall! At least I think I am. It’s a good time for reflection and getting out in the world before Mother Nature puts the whammy on us.

About the apology and forgiveness thing. Of course, as a thinking and feeling person we don’t want to hurt others and sometimes we don’t know when we’ve done so. At a certain point we just have to quit wringing our hands and feeling guilty. Often the people we think we’ve wronged don’t think we have and vice versa. Sometimes by apologizing we open old wounds for people that they had successfully closed. For me, I found it helpful to do the following: 1) make a list of the people we think we owe apologies too 2) make a list of those we think owe us apologies 3) make a list of things we need to forgive ourselves for…. It really does help me find peace in a world that is anything but peaceful.
