I think I’m in love – with Avoca, Nebraska! Returning from Wisconsin where I saw my youngest Grand graduate from high school, we had reserved rooms at the Motel 6. Motel 6 often gets a bad rap; the one in Avoca is quite satisfactory – and allows pets with no added fee.
We arrived early enough that after a light dinner, we had time to drive around the town. Almost the first things that caught our eyes were the spider and the dragon. Huge, oversized creatures sitting beside the road, totally worthy of having their picture taken.
The business section is about two blocks square. There was a library. I did not see a pharmacy. Or, a grocery store. Or, a hardware. I think towns in Nebraska are often close enough to each other that those merchants can be accessed by Avoca residents.
The crowning glory of the town, however, is the gorgeous, well-kept houses. Two and three story beauties. I will include some of their photographs here; there are so many that I can’t include all of them. Although I can imagine living in one of them, it is impossible to choose just one to be my desired residence. It is clear from their appearance that they are loved and well cared for. Here they are.
As I said, I could see myself living in one of these magnificent beauties.
Be Safe and Be Well.

Not only Motel 6 gets a bad rap. So too does the Midwest. Yet I have seen lovely towns like this in Kansas, South Dakota and Minnesota. I imagine they exist throughout the Midwest, and indeed throughout this country. Our politics may differ to a great extent, but I can never disparage my fellow Americans while beautiful towns such as Avoca exist.
I think we ate in a diner next to the spider and dragon. Such beautiful houses!
I really like looking at the house in Avoca when I pass through there. The first time that I visited the Volkswagen Beetle Spider the corn next to it in the field was quite high. This year, it looks like the farmer is letting the field go fallow. I’m glad that we had the change to share this town together, ma!
